The Smith Flat Rock Hotel

Circa 1890

This building was first opened for business on October 23, 1896. It was billed as a "first class hotel capable of accommodating all comers."  Handbills read, "Meals 35 cents in our dining room."  This Italianate structure is built of solid brick.   In early 1999 our company was hired to move this building. The fowling pictures give a perspective of the job.

This picture shows how holes have been broken through the foundation to allow for installation of support steel.

This picture shows the massive main support steel being installed under the building.  Two of these beams will be installed in total.  A second layer will be installed on top of and perpendicular to these.

The first ten of the second layer of steel has been installed.

The building has been raised a total of 6 feet and is ready for dollies.

Dollies being installed.  A total of 10 hydraulic dollies will be used.

The Flat Rock Hotel begins it's journey into the new millennium.  In this picture the building is pulled part way off foundation and into the street.  A total of 80 tires support the building.

Dollies are turned and the building pivots 130 degrees bringing it parallel with Gibraltar Street.

The building has arrived at the new site.  We are crossing a field and are about 100 feet from the excavation for the new foundation.  It is 3:00 p.m. we started at 8:00 a.m.

A job well done!  7:00 p.m. Wednesday and the building is positioned and ready for the wheels to be removed.   I am very proud of the fine job my crew did.  Special thanks to Structural Movers; Murray Abra & crew, Lindsay Graham & crew and Laurie McCulloch & crew for their help on move day.
